The Origin Story of Huw Morris

In this episode of the SK Soccer Legacy Podcast, we dive into the remarkable journey of Huw Morris, a true soccer visionary whose passion for the beautiful game has left an indelible mark on Canadian soccer. Born in Swansea, South Wales, Huw’s love for soccer began at age eight with Winch Wen AFC, inspired by icons like George Best and hometown club Swansea City. In 1976, at 23, Huw and his wife Angela made the bold move to Saskatoon, Canada, where his soccer legacy would take root.
Huw’s playing career with Saskatoon United Soccer Club saw him compete at the premier level and represent Saskatchewan in the All-Star League. Transitioning to coaching in the early 1990s, Huw’s 30+ year coaching career is a testament to his dedication. From head coaching a trial CPL Saskatchewan team in 2019 to assisting Canada’s U15 regional team, and leading Saskatchewan all-star teams, Huw’s resume is extensive. His work with the SSA/CSA High Performance Program, local high school leagues, and zone soccer showcases his commitment to player development.
His coaching philosophy emphasizes fun, teamwork, inclusion, and long-term player development over short-term wins, creating a supportive environment tailored to players’ abilities.
A key figure in Hollandia Soccer Club and the restructuring of Saskatoon United, Huw has coached and played at National Championships and the Canada/Western Canada Summer Games for over four decades. His contributions have earned him prestigious accolades, including Saskatchewan Soccer’s Life Membership Award, the David Newsham Volunteer Award, the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame Builder Award and the Canadian Soccer Award of Merit.
